Hunter Douglas Vignette with LiteRise (cordless) lifting system for child safety

Hunter Douglas Vignette with LiteRise (cordless) lifting system for child safety

Hunter Douglas, along with us here at Read Design, believe it is our duty to bring awareness to the hazards or hanging cords. All of our products are designed with safety in mind — a responsibility we take very seriously.

Children are innately curious about the world around them. So, even basic household items like window coverings can turn into potential hazards. Making our window fashions safer for homes with infants, young children and pets is a top priority at Hunter Douglas. That's why we developed a wide range of products to help reduce the risk of accidents. From cordless and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls, we offer a wide array of lifting system options for enhanced child and pet safety.

October is Child Safety Month and hanging cords from window coverings is one of the top seven hidden dangers in the home. Help us spread awareness about this very real hazard. Always take extra precautions and opt for the safe window treatments in all environments where children and pets interact with shades. We recommend cordless or motorized window coverings because they really are the safest choice for all of your windows. We love our kiddos, whether they be two legged or four and want to make sure every person knows about the alternatives to keep our loved ones safe. Any chance to remove a potential hazard from a home is a win for us because we all know one accident is too many.

I have a 2 year old and a dog at home. Growing up in the window covering industry, I’ve always been aware of the dangers of hanging cords. When I found out I was pregnant with my son, I immediately got rid of my blinds with cords and invested in Roller Shades with PowerView and Silhouette Shades with UltraGlide. Watching my son and dog play around the shades and moving them to see out the window, I know I made the right decision.
— Kate, Read Design

The window coverings industry uses warning tags, labels, and other methods to communicate the potential hazards of corded window coverings. The warning labels communicate the important message about cords being a potential strangulation hazard and suggests choosing cordless or inaccessible-cord alternatives. Together with the Window Covering Safety Council, Hunter Douglas encourages you to install only cordless window coverings in rooms where young children play and sleep. For more info and repair kits for other window covering products, visit the Window Covering Safety Council website.

A detailed chart of safety options across our products can be found in our Safety Reference Chart.

Vintage Design

Read Design

With the instantaneous nature of social media, many interior design trends are here today, gone tomorrow. That’s not necessarily the case with re-purposed and distressed design stories, however. Rather than being shiny and new, and therefore destined to a limited shelf life, accenting a room with antiqued-themed accessories and themes often create such a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that it presents a design with staying power.

“People are drawn to vintage looks because of their uncommon uniqueness,” remarks Kim Pheiffer of KP Designs, based in Columbus, Ohio. The firm is home to 14 designers and currently is working on more than 50 projects ranging from window treatments to full kitchen and bathroom makeovers.

“Often times a vintage design approach incorporates a nautical or farmhouse feel. Even in a brand new home, clients can bring that vintage look to a room, for lived-in feel with striking architectural details. In that sense, you can take what would otherwise be a ‘cookie-cutter’ home and give it a truly custom look and feel.”

On a broad scale, KP Designs has installed shiplap over drywall and reclaimed barn wood, which can be painted or stained. “It adds tremendous depth and dimension to a room,” Pheiffer explains, adding that their firm has also achieved the same effect using brick facing on walls. “It’s unexpected casual, for a relaxed treatment that really stands out.”

On a smaller scale, hints of the nautical and aquatic looks can, likewise, achieve the same carefree feel. “It’s not about full-fledged anchors or starfish everywhere, but just a few seafaring touches in soothing greys and blues,” she says. “One color we’ve been loving is called seasalt—it’s almost a green-blue with just a hint of grey.” Additional elements that pull the look together are rope textures and colored glasses, such as lamps that incorporate touches of muted blues and greens.

Other accessories Pheiffer and her team seek out are those that traditionally have served one function in days gone by, but that can be repurposed as an eyecatching embellishment. For example, KP Designs has made beautiful use of unconventional mirrors that are more artwork than looking glasses. On another project, the firm purchased corbels in Paris that were originally used at a train station and used them to flank a doorway opening.

Asked why vintage and subtle nautical themes have remained so popular over the years, and Pheiffer offers a simple explanation: “I think it’s retail stores that drive it, but in the end it allows people to take something they may have admired during vacationing or travels and bring a bit of that feeling and memory home with them.”

Vignette Modern Roman Shade

We recently helped a client in Trophy Club, Texas with the windows in her master bedroom. She wanted a transitional look, clean and simple, but with an element of exquisite design. Her walls were painted a medium, almost dark, gray so we suggested a the versatile Vignette Shade in the White Satin fabric with the top down - bottom up feature. She loved the idea of top down - bottom up shades because these windows were located on the side of her home and faced the street. This was the perfect solution to optimal privacy and light control and how our client says she leaves them in the pictured position all the time because she loves the way it looks.

Design Studio Roman Shades

Another Hunter Douglas Roman Shade option is the Design Studio. These shades are customized through pattern and texture. Expertly crafted to order, these soft Roman Shades offer elegant window coverings in more than 300 exquisite fabrics - from sophisticated designs, textures and stripes to simple solids in blends of cotton, linen, silk and synthetics.

Design Studio Roman Shades in North Dallas

We recently helped a couple with the remodel of their North Dallas home. This was a fun and challenging project with a few areas where we really had to give a lot of thought to the windows. In the family room and breakfast room the windows were removed and large sliding doors were installed to give a large open view to their patio. Our client wanted complete privacy at night, but keep the view during the day. Vertical shades were not the look of this home so we considered Luminette Privacy Sheers, but we lacked enough room on the sides to stack the fabric. We finally decided to use Design Studio Roman Shades and layer them with a custom fabric covered cornice board. This was the perfect look and solution for this home! For the shades we used a neutral fabric called Destination in color Ecru and the PowerView Motorized Operating System for convenience and a clean look with no hanging cords. The shades completely cover the doors and can stack all the way up under the cornice as if it is not there at all. Our client prefers the layered look and so has the controls set to stop in her desired position. For the cornice board, we used a textured fabric from Kravet that really tied the room together.

Our customer did love the Luminette Privacy Sheers though and we were able to use one in the upstairs game room. This is also powered by the PowerView Motorized Operating System.

Luminette Shade With PowerView In Robson Ranch

Recently we were fortunate enough to help a customer from Robson Ranch just off Highway 35W. It is a wonderful community for folks 55 and older. They have a couple of golf courses and have just about every activity you can imagine. Our client stopped by the Southlake store because they were moving in soon and needed ideas for their windows. Jeff met with them at their new home and listened to their thoughts. They live on one of the new golf courses that will be completed in 10 months, so they have a fantastic view and don't want to lose it. The dining room gets the most sun, but at different times of the day and the family room looks out onto the covered patio without much sun. Jeff suggested just using stationary drapery panels in the family room to frame the windows and add a pop of color while keeping the natural light and views. He selected a fabric from Fabricut that would coordinate with pillows that would go on their sectional sofa.

For the large sliding door in the dining room, he showed them the Luminette from Hunter Douglas in the Radiant White color. Needless to say, our client fell in love! These modern vertical shades offer ultimate light control with vanes that move left and right to deflect the suns rays. This shade was the perfect solution for style and function.

What Is A Luminette?

Luminettes are privacy sheers made by Hunter Douglas. They allow privacy with softened light so you can enjoy the ultimate light control and the privacy of soft draperies with these beautiful sheers. Fabric vanes rotate to control the light in the room. They are perfect for large windows and sliding glass doors and their superior UV protection meets both your decorating and practical needs.

Designer Roller Shades

For the 3 back windows in the dining room we selected Designer Roller Shades in an Organic White. We made 3 custom cornice board window treatments using a very colorful fabric from Kravet. This gave the windows a finished look and when the shades go up they disappear beneath them. This paired wonderfully with the Luminette. The best part was that we used PowerView Motorization for both the Roller Shades and the Luminette and included the hub for the whole home automation function.

We can help you with all of your window covering needs from shades, shutters and blinds to custom drapery, wallpaper and upholstery. Commercial or residential - no job is too big or too small!

A Southlake, Texas Shutter Installation - Lighting Up A Room With Style And Quality

We recently helped a customer in Southlake who had stopped by our Hunter Douglas Gallery. She knew she wanted shutters in her new family room and kitchen because these rooms face west. We showed her Hunter Douglas NewStyle shutters and she loved the quality and feel of the shutter as well as the ease of cleaning. They are at a great price point too! We then made an appointment for an in home consultation and measure. We suggested that we use the 4 1/2" louver size because of how it opens up the room to the outside. We used the Bright White color because of the perfect match to the window sills.

The shutters were installed a few weeks later and they not only looked beautiful, they also helped with the client's energy efficiency, solar heat control and UV protection. The Hunter Douglas NewStyle Shutters were a perfect solution for these rooms. A few weeks later we were back adding shutters in her Master Bedroom and Bath. The Master Bath was my favorite. I love this look!

NewStyle Shutters In Frisco, Texas

For this client in Frisco, Texas we installed Hunter Douglas NewStyle Shutters throughout her new Shaddock Home. These shutters are custom crafted for each window. We used the standard Z frame and they all looked beautiful. Our client was happy with the high quality standards and the feeling of comfort that the home now has. We used 4 1/2" louvers to eccentuate the large windows and give the most view through to the outside. We added a divider rail so the bottom portion and top portion can operate independently providing privacy when needed and maximum light control up top. The front tilt rods gave the traditional shutter look that the client loved and makes her new house feel like home.

Drapery Panels

Drapery Panels Add Just The Right Look

The mood of your room can affect how you think and feel everyday. The room arrangement, decor and colors can have a huge impact on us. We consider your windows and your window treatments to be the backdrop of your home and the Designers at Read Design have ideas that will influence your mood and your daily life. This is not new. For years researchers have studied how color can affect the different aspects of our lives. Our Designers can help you create the perfect environment for each room of your home.

Drapery Panels For A Dining Room In Frisco, TX

We have a client from Frisco, Texas who stopped by our Plano Showroom. She wanted a new look for her Dining Room but didn't know exactly what she wanted. Maybe new paint or perhaps new furniture.. she just didn't know! We made an appointment to see her home and the first piece that stood out to us was her beautiful chandelier. This definitely would stay. She also had a very nice contemporary piece of art with a ton of color that hung above her sideboard. That too would stay. These were our two inspirational pieces. We decided to create a transitional look with both furniture and color. First we decided to keep the wall color, her rug and her sideboard. We needed a fresh Dining Set to get away from the traditional style. Her french doors lead to an enclosed atrium so we chose not to cover the doors with shades, but rather added drapery panels to frame and soften the opening. We selected the most beautiful linen and metallic sheer fabric from Kravet Couture. Then we had the rod and finials hand painted combining gold and silver metallic paint. This created a sophisticated light and airy look. We were both very pleased with how the room came together.

Reupholstery

We took two chairs that our client had owned for years and added a few modern touches to the otherwise very traditional chairs. We had them painted in the same metallic style as the rods and reupholstered the chairs with a soft green velvet fabric. To add a little color, we made a roll pillow using an embroidered Kravet fabric.

This was one of my favorite project. I loved bringing together the traditional and contemporary and the gold and silver finishes. This new look showcases her chandelier, painting and atrium (to which she has added planted) and makes this dining room one of the most inviting spaces in her home.

Long Drapery Panels For A North Dallas Home

Our North Dallas client bought an existing home and visited our Southlake showroom to get ideas on what to do with her newly remodeled family room windows. She let us know that she only needed privacy in the evening and, because she loves the outdoors, wanted to keep it light and airy during the day. Her favorite colors are dark blue and green, not surprising considering her love of the outdoors and nature.

Here is a perfect way to control how a customer feels in their home. Our team in Southlake suggested that she use a simple Roller Shade from Hunter Douglas for an inexpensive solution to the nighttime privacy issue. They will only be lowered at night and go up during the day, seemingly disappearing into the headrail. She can still see the beautiful clouds in the blue sky and yet have privacy when she needs it. Perfect! We also added the new PowerView Motorization with the Hub to make it easy to control from her iPad. To finish, they suggested drapery panels to add color and softness to the room and to make the panels long enough to go from the top of the upper windows to the floor. This created a dramatic look and connect the windows while drawing your eyes up and making the room feel bigger. They used a fabric in a navy color and contemporary design. After having everything installed, she told us this is now her favorite room in the house because of colors and how everything flows so well. She loves it and we do too!

Pirouette - The Roman Shade With A View

Read Design

pirouette_hunter_plano.jpg

As you know, the Pirouette Shade by Hunter Douglas is one of our favorite products because of its versatility and beauty. It is a shade that can be used for nearly every window with so many fabrics, colors, textures and lift systems. We get excited when we can show customers this truly unique shade.

Pirouettes for a Prosper Home

A couple from Prosper, Texas recently stopped by our Plano Hunter Douglas Gallery. They were in the process of getting new windows in their breakfast room and kitchen and were needing new window treatments. Their first thought was just to replace the roman shades with something new. So we showed them all of the displays and explained to them the features and benefits of Hunter Douglas products. We then made an appointment for an In‐home consultation.

We were given a tour of the couple’s home and they showed us the rooms where they were getting new windows. The breakfast room and kitchen were their first project. These windows face the back yard where there is a beautiful swimming pool and beyond that a small lake. The couple loves to sit here in the morning and enjoy this view. But in the afternoon they do get a lot of sun streaming in. Hunter Douglas’ Pirouette was the Perfect Solution. This shade is what we call a Roman Shade with a view. It can be opened for complete view, closed for complete privacy , or you can open the vanes to give a soft view while still protecting from UV rays and glare.

What are Pirouette Shadings?

Pirouettes from Hunter Douglas are window shadings that give you the function of a window treatment with beautiful style you won’t find with a regular shade. Pirouettes feature soft adjustable horizontal fabric vanes attached to a single sheer backing to control light in an innovative way. With the pull of a cord or the push of a button, the shade transforms from cascading folds to contoured vanes, bringing light in and opening up the view to the outside. There are over 250 fabric choices with many different textures and colors. Pirouette shades are perfect for standard windows, large windows and specialty shaped windows.

The Perfect Solution

Right away we knew Pirouettes would be the perfect solution and once we showed these to our customer they were sold and excited. Because they recently painted the kitchen cabinets, we though they needed a soft color so we selected the Satin Fabric in color Vapor. This gave just a hint of color which was all that was needed. And because they have a total of 9 windows, we added PowerView motorization system with the Hub which allows the customer to control the shades from their smart phones or Ipads.

The Perfect Installation

Our own installers did a great job with the installation and set‐up of the PowerView Hub. And results were amazing‐ The Perfect Solution!!!
