Fresh Ideas For Your Home - Indoor/Outdoor Spaces

Blending your indoor and outdoor living spaces enhances summer enjoyment.

A seamless transition will extend your indoor environment, creating an outdoor living area that feels like an extension of your indoor space. This makes for a seamless and unified transition. It’s a synthesis of style that blends outdoor and indoor living.

If you focus on your outdoor living space as much as your indoor design style, you’ll gain a welcoming look that makes it easy to glide effortlessly from indoors to outdoors and back. You’ll find that you use your outdoor space more, whether it’s a deck, terrace, garden or large backyard.

So many materials work well both for indoors and out, including teak, stainless steel, rattan, wicker, easy-care fabrics, glass and more.  Focus on beauty, as well as function, for your outdoor living elements, so they don’t look like an afterthought, but rather a design style that’s coordinated with your interior decorating plan.

Some design ideas to link your adjacent indoor and outdoor spaces include:

  • Use similar colors, materials and styles inside and out.

  • Introduce a few soft surfaces outdoors, such as rugs, throw pillows and soft upholstery.

  • Hang soft, translucent window fashions that make the outdoors look closer.

  • Add matching accent pieces indoors and out, including table linens, lanterns, candles and flower arrangements.

  • Plan adequate sun covering outdoors, using umbrellas, awnings or a built shading structure, so you’re willing to keep the windows and window treatments open without sun damage to furniture and floors.

  • Use ceramic stools, durable tables and easy-clean dining chairs that you can move in and out as the need arises.

  • Use Corradi Outdoor Screen Shades to keep the bugs off while enjoying the fresh air.

Bring your outdoor and indoor living spaces together for summer relaxation with family and friends.

Small businesses are an essential part of a healthy local economy. We have something to offer that most large corporations simply cannot. We have a tight knit group of people that thrive on and are invested in customer satisfaction. In our case here at Read Design, we are a hard working family. This November, we are participating in Small Business Saturday, a shopping holiday designated for small companies.

With the coming of the holidays, it's easy for small businesses like us to be overshadowed by large corporations and Black Friday. We just don't have the resources to compete in the ever growing, million dollars promotions. But with over 28 million small businesses in the US (2.5 million in Texas) and 54% of all US sales, it's hard to deny that we have the biggest impact on our economy. We keep our money local and our profits go right back into our community. Circulating money in your area helps the community thrive and enables individuals and businesses to support each other.

When you visit our shops, you always know who is going to greet you. We don't have a "revolving door of nameless salespeople" like big businesses.

Show your love and shop small this Saturday! At Read Design, we can offer you exceptional service and a unique experience for all your home decor and interior design needs. We are the Hunter Douglas and Interior Design experts in Dallas with over 25 years of experience. We are passionate about what we do and work hard to make your house feel like home.

So stop by one of our locations either in Plano or Southlake to take advantage of our shop small experience!

Luminette Privacy Sheers From Hunter Douglas

Luminettes for Sliding Glass Doors

We are noticing here in the Dallas - Fort Worth areas that more and more home builders are using large sliding glass doors to the patio. These large expanses of window definitely open up the indoors and gives a full view to the outside. We have seen these doors in Robson Ranch, Plano, Prosper and Frisco to name a few. We recently did a Luminette Privacy Sheer for a client in Southlake. This turned out to be one of our favorite installations!

Southlake Luminette

Our client called the Southlake store asking for help on what to do with their sliding glass door that opened up onto their large patio. They use their outside living area all the time - in the summer for fun in the pool and now for football watching parties. They certainly did want their privacy so the area needed some sort of covering. The design of their home is a soft transitional look with a lot of color in the accents - particularly their art and throw pillows. They were concerned that the only option would be the traditional vertical blinds because that was not the look they wanted. We showed them the Luminette Privacy Sheers by Hunter Douglas and that was it! They fell in love with the soft look that easily opens up the whole area and just as easily closes for privacy with some light or completely closes for full privacy.

What is a Luminette

Sheer inspiration...The joy of natural light, the benefit of UV protection.

Luminettes are a Privacy Sheer made by Hunter Douglas, the leader in Custom Window Fashions/ They offer subdued light with the privacy of a drapery. Fabric vanes rotate for privacy while controlling the light in a room. They can also open all the way for complete view to the outdoors. Luminettes are perfect for large windows and sliding glass doors, their superior UV protection meets both your decorating and practical needs.

The Southlake Design Plan

For our Southlake client we selected the Luminette in color Linen Flirt. We used the split stack option so the sheers open from the middle and the PowerView Motorization operating system for convenience. This way our client can easily open up their room to the patio. We also added side drapery panels to frame the windows and create a softening effect. Here we chose a fabric from Fabricut called Wow Lattice in color Slate. It has a large, neutral pattern that added the drama that was needed without a lot of color. This is one of our favorites! Soon we will be adding  a few throw pillows for their large sectional sofa in bright colors of orange, yellow, indigo and purple. These pillows will complement the room very well.

Fresh Ideas For Your Home - Outdoor Living

Read Design

Plan for outdoor living this summer.

It's time to shop for outdoor furniture for your patio, terrace, balcony or garden. Outdoor living is all about comfort and relaxation. It can happen wherever you have outdoor space – in the courtyard or backyard, balcony or terrace.

Build your outdoor retreat from the ground up, considering flooring, plants, furniture, umbrellas and awnings. There are so many choices in colors, finishes and materials – and most outdoor living elements are now made out of materials that resist degrading in the heat and humidity.

  • For your flooring, think terra cotta, flagstone, pavers, an interesting cement finish, wood planks or lawn. Outdoor rugs are even available to soften a hard flooring choice.
  • In your furniture scheme, plan for a dining area with tables and chairs, and a more casual lounging area for just hanging around. Explore the variety of materials available, including teak, faux wood products, powder coated aluminum, glass, stone, real or faux wicker and specially formulated outdoor fabrics that are mildew- and fade-resistant.
  • For your dining pleasure, use washable cotton table linens or even paper napkins, and unbreakable plates and glasses. It’s time to put away the starched table linens and the fine china and take it easy.
  • In the foliage category, consider blooming flowers that add not only color, but smell good too! A lush trellis can add intimacy and privacy.
  • For sun covering, you can use umbrellas, have a shading structure built, or install an awning that comes out from the house – or you can get your shade from strategically planted trees!
  • Accent pieces that add to your outdoor ambience include throw pillows, outdoor lanterns, water features, candles and flower arrangements.

Don’t forget the barbeque!

Who doesn’t like cooking and dining in the open air? In fact, according to Better Homes and Gardens Magazine, 72% of their Facebook fans say that a backyard barbecue is their favorite kind of summer party. But keep it easy because people also like the easy, relaxing feel of outdoor dining.

Spring for some outdoor living choices now, so you can sit back and relax when the sunny weather is here!
